Children Apparel/Community Service project

Each year our fashion students study the safe construction & design in creating children’s wear. Their concepts and illustration take form into their own drafted pattern. In the spirit giving, they each produce a garment for our community service project.  We are very proud of fashion student Carrie Roske, who went beyond creating just one garment, she dedicated her time in designing and creating 10 corduroy dress/jumpers.  We are very proud of her exceptional workmanship and handwork in creating all these garments. Many of these adorable dresses are given to families at the Heartland House as well as several churches and organizations that help provide Christmas gifts and clothing for children.

Our interior students have been touring the local furniture showrooms while expanding their knowledge and appreciation of the craftsmanship of furniture periods & styles.

Once again our Creative Director will be heading out Portland to present her S2013 collection at one of the largest west coast fashion week events.  She will be opening the Friday evening event and share the excitement with Project Runway Season 7 winner, Seth Aaron Henderson as he will close the evening with his 2013 collection.  They will “book-end” the Friday event with an impressive line-up of young designers including Joshua Christensen and Joshua Mckinley both from Season 9 Project Runway.  Each year a IDTSD student is presented an incredible opportunity to accompany her to assist with fittings, help back stage and experience in the excitement behind the scenes of a major fashion event.

PLAINS GREEN CONFERENCE

This region’s premiere event on green design, business was held at the historic Orpheum Theater in Downtown Sioux Falls It was an exceptional opportunity to come together learn and take action with other attendees and star-power keynotes at this year’s conference with exhibitors, workshops and breakouts.

Presenter and leader in healthy and sustainable building issues, Professor Brain Dunbar is shown wearing one of Dakota By Design ties made from reclaimed media tape with IDTSD Creative Director Anita Kealey is wearing a suit made of natural linen with media tape accents.

“Trash to Treasures” competition showcased two outstanding examples of IDTSD students green projects.  This exquisite evening gown design using newspapers was created by recent IDTSD Fashion Design graduate, Kate Warkenthien.

Summer Project: Design Boot Camp student, Rylee Skillman used a piece of reclaimed luggage, old furniture legs, discarded bedding was transformed into an funky, yet functional bed for their family dog.

KANSAS CITY FASHION WEEK

Our creative director was invited to show her SS2013 at collection at Kansas City Fashion Week.  This presented an opportunity for summer and incoming students to help in the preparation as well get a behind the scenes viewpoint of what hard work and planning that it actually takes to complete a collection.

We were welcomed with great enthusiasm from the models and the fashion week organizers as the Dakota by Design/LENZANITA collection was honored to open the Friday night show.   We look forward to returning to Kansas City again.

PROJECT: DESIGN BOOT CAMP Activities

Future designers learn to start with their concept on paper before actually creating the finished project.

Sustainable Accessory Design class created many fashionable pieces including footwear, belts, necklaces and bracelets from recycled/reclaimed materials.
